Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Lewis himself has said that this is a long term project. So to dismiss things as hopeless after the first day of testing seems premature, which it would be anyway.

After watching F1 for 20 odd years, one thing I've learned is that the only thing that gives an, anywhere near, correct indication of how a team or driver is doing, is the number of points they accumulate over a season. Even then it's not ideal but to write the W04 off after one day is beyond absurd.

Seems to me a lot more is burning than just a wiring loom. We can see fire coming out in front of the rear wheel.

11 laps and the paint has already started to bubble up.

It happened the same thing last year after they introduced their version of the Coandă exhaust if I remember correctly (or after switching back). Don't remember if it happened with their previous, more conventional version though.

My opinion is that they could have run the car the afternoon but they probably took the most out of repair time to cross examine other parts of the car and avoid similar happenings for the rest of the week. and this car doesn't look that bad, but Lewis will tell more about that

In this interview to Peter Windsor and Scarbs, Force India's Technical Director, Andrew Green, at some point, says about the better aerodynamics of the vanity pannel: "The numbers from the tunnel are very small, but it doesn't take a very big aerodynamic gain to offset a mass, center of gravity disadvantadge. The aero number wins by quite a margin...."

This interview make a very positive effect on any further related discussion that we might have in the forum, regardless of the car in question!

Aerodynamic gains easily offset higher CoG :!:
as i recall from the video they are only taking about the gains of the vanity vane regarding CoG. a overall low CoG is what you look for, for having good mechanical grip. and this does not interfere with aerodownforce.

Except this car is not SWB and the WB is not shorter than W03 at the very least

Think this problem will have something to do with the pipe coming off the exhaust which 'stores' the gases allowing for the car to blow off throttle - it sure sounds like it's blowing.

A new season so time to remind us of the trusted phrase...

If your topic isn't about a feature on the car then it doesn't belong in this thread.

Many posts have been moved to team talk. http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewto ... iew=unread
