Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

What is wrong with you people?

These comments in this thread are below the pitifully low standard set by Planet F1.

Is this a technical forum or what?

+1 At least post them to another section if you want to moan about it...Theres the team section you can criticize there jeez...I come here every day to get informed about the cars progress/features/failures (yes failures are part of the game) and all i see is irony, bashing and non constructive input...Its like in the history of F1 testing no other team has had failures that cost them days of testing laps.Seriously this has to stop.

On the car, this little flap hanging down the main plane on the rear wing, any ideas of what is the use of it? Turning vanes under the nose look a bit basic compared to lets say McLaren maybe we can expect a change there...Also the rear wing endplates look like they miss the louvres that the majority of the teams have...Is that wing a subject to be changed or they have only a new FW in the works? Lewis first flyer wasn't so bad either...

Why are they covering the rear wing? Isn't ıt the same as the wing used last year. Or, Are they covering the rear wing in order not to show the rear parts of the car (suspensions, diffuser, etc)

+1 on this...the down side of a successful forum I guess...

Could the vertical flap thing on the rear wing be simply a flow conditioner to (complete guess here) reduce turbulence/drag from the engine cover...is that possible??
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Look on the bright side - the fundamental issues (looms (fire!), breaks) could point to this really being a much newer package that the general perception was on the initial release.

For one I will take this as a good sign

Oh it's wrong to be negative. Ok, no problems at all.

I wondered if that hanging down piece of carbon fibre could be to attach sensors/instrumentation which they may be planning at some point in the test.

In general, the kind of things that would excite me is if we start seeing lots of sensors, and aero-paint. That would indicate to me more than anything else the progress this team is making.

The area around the exhaust seems a little burned, doesn't it?

That was what I thought and expect to see sensors on it. I can't think what its purpose would be otherwise.

I think they have a problem with their material engineers...

I dont think this is nessesarily a problem with the material rather than the actual silver/chrome paint tending to discolorize with heat.Paint peeling or discolour doesnt mean that the material itself is deforming but i could as well be wrong.I remember seeing the exact same thing on a McLaren some seasons ago in testing.Sure isnt a good thing to happen but it cant be catastrophic either.

Yes, same here. There are two holes on that piece. They look like mounting points. Possibly sensors or a passive DRS.
Honda!
