Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

A good step forward with the new front wing. Much more details.

Can't say that I'm impressed. Looks like they split the upper element into two and refined the design, but it's nothing exceptional. Red-Bull's front wing looks miles ahead in that regard.

It's just the crease where sidepod meets floor. It's concave but looks convex because of a trick of the light.

I don't think that's the new front wing Brawn was talking about. It is just the old one with some tweaks.

Looking at the temperature stickers there, it at least looks like the exhaust is going where they want it to go. That's a good sign :)

It has 5 elements. It is a similar design, but with updates.

12:19 Good consistency from Rosberg at the moment, who comes round for his third consecutive lap in the 1m20s.

Does anyone know why Mercedes persist with the conditioning winglets near the central pylons and have elements that curve down a lot before the central pylon. Is it due to the cooling that they appear to need more of even than other Merc engined teams or does anyone know of an aerodynamic advantage that this solution gives?

RedBull are still using the R-cascade so it can be that bad or only cooling related
For a more technical answer, I think a more competent guy will answer soon (or at least make a proposition even if it has surely been discussed before)

Despite some components being modified following the fire on the W04 the car still shows clear signs that it is getting far too hot.

The Ferrari and McLaren wings use the sharp corner of the inside of the wing elements as vortex generators...Merc uses a flow conditioner and it's corner as a vortex generator...conceptually the same, just difference in placement.
