looks almost like an airbrake?!?

This will make alot of drag back there!!

It's a passive F duct. The airbrake is really something that cuases a vacuum to be pulled through that pipe at the bottom.
As the air speed increases, ie the car goes faster, the pressure behind the airbrake will drop and the vacuum will be stronger on the pipe. It's all a part of the switching of the f duct.
So it's more of a shroud than a brake.

the rear of the car does look tighter, the body work has been shrunk somewhat.

You are totally correct. It is a pity that others take credit for something that Allison said publicly on TV.

Are you sure? If I recall correctly, Allison merely stated that internally they call it "The Device".
Drag Reduction Device - whilst a logical extension - I do not believe Allison uttered the "DRD" description or acronym.

I couldn't give a S#£% about the bubbling paint work, by far the biggest problem last year was rear tyre wear and this is what they need to fix, Lewis is a good qualifier if not the best qualifier, he needs good race pace to make the most of this.

I'm realistic, this car is not going to push the RB, Macca & Ferrari all the way, but I'm hoping that on it's day, on the right track, Lewis can push for wins in this car.

Yes, The fifty million dollar question is if Mercedes has finally fixed the rear tyre wear and grip problems that have plagued them for the last two years.

I think the W04 should be competitive at least and can fight for poles and wins on it's day and at the right circuit.

I'm %100 sure that paintwork around exhausts will change to carbon like the one on RedBull's ramp.

I wonder what the silver reverse ramps on top of the driveshaft cowling are for. Maybe sensors looking at the exhaust (in the same way they look at the tyres with IR sensors) or maybe scooping some air in to the cowling to keep something cool. Perhaps it's part of the signalling system for the passive DRD thingy.
