Lewis Hamilton on this weeks episode of Topgear

Post

So as the name suggests Lewis is apparently appearing on this weeks Topgear. Should be interesting, last time it was some of the worst conditions on the track and he done a mighty quick time. The board is currently headed by a certain Mr Vettel. Hopefully he will get the same conditions and give us a general idea of where the 2 drivers stand relative to each other. Obviously just a general idea as no 2 sets of conditions could ever be identical outside of a lab.

I remembered that.

Hamilton's old lap was in wet and oil, yet set a higher time then quite alot of people did in the dry and clean. It was .7 seconds slower then Vettel's; vettel did 1m 44s flat, in dry conditions.

Here is his one (with interview before the lap):

Just for the sake of it, Vettel's one:

Also Button's times are quite relevant. I think he done 1 in the wet ( well damp, I think lewis' conditions looked worse) and one in the dry, and neither of them were as fast as Hamilton's wet time. I think it'l be an interesting interview. Haven't really seen anything in a laid back manner of lewis since joining Merc. I think a lot of the interviews and stuff we have seen so far have been quite formal. Obviously he still has to be relatively well behaved but I'm hoping for a little bit of insight as to how he really feels about his 2013 car.

I just noticed, Vettel's lap was actually illegal (by F1 standards) – all 4 wheels off the track in the second last corner.

Yeah well, what ya gonna do. By F1 standards his car should be open wheeled.

I believe it is the international sporting code that says it is illegal to leave the the track, defined by the white lines, so it should cover everything FIA not only F1

Well by that standard it is also disallowed for a traffic car to cross the white lines, yet f1 cars do this always with 2 wheels :P .
Enough joking. Yes he cut the corner a bit; it shouldn't give him that much more time though and given the show is actually more about jeremy clarkson's dry british humor then about cars, we can let that slip, can't we?

Well like I said, a loose comparison assuming the conditions are comparable :P

As was, let's not forget - Hamilton's lap. He cuts the white lines on the entry to the Hammerhead (the first left hairpin before the long right)

He actually cuts it twice - on the entry and at the apex of hammerhead.

Which will gain you far more time then cutting the 2nd to last corner. Anyone who has played the track in a video game will realise just how much the first part of hammerhead throws the car out of balance and you can gain an immense amount of time but cutting the corner even a little bit. I don't think the camera angles they show really conveys just how much of a corner the first part of hammerhead is.

Calling that track wet, let alone some of the worst conditions ever is putting very generously. It is damp at best.

There's a video on YouTube (which I can't find right now) that shows the corner cutting. That being said - IMO it was an honest mistake. The wet was making it hard to see the lines.

No he doesn't. He gets two wheels across the line on both, but never 4.
