Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Did you actually read the article? Their math is different than yours. And since they're the ones claiming 2 seconds, we should probably be consistent and use the rest of the numbers they're relaying when we analyze their claim.

They were 9 tenths behind the top in Jerez so if they were 1s back they have recovered 1 tenth :|

The AMuS article also speaks of an american company Mercedes are working with on development of a new cooling concept which will reduce radiator size by 30% for the same heat rejection. Apparently the new system is not reliable yet.

Brawn: we will test all the exhaust versions, even the one we used last year. At the moment the RBR exhaust solution is in our CFD-simulator

Would be nice if they were certain of the direction they want to take by now...

Testing the rbr solution is fair enough, but testing last years, really?

I already see last years problems, this team dose not have direction they want to take, they wandering around that exaust like no one. what the hell did they do last 6 months? to find optimum solution for exaust and stick with it.
constantly changing exaust position and solution will again bring them heating tires problem and overheating sidepods, like last two years.

I am not sure if the front wing pasive air switch blowing last year was all Ross' idea.
It could have come from Rory Byrne and might account for the cover up at the Ferrari release of their cars lower design.

They are applying a backwards integration of interfaces to verify theoretical constructs stemming from obtuse thinking and captured via psychological cracking of organisational paradigms.

You're kidding, right? Every other team that can afford it is likely running all of their primary competitors exhaust solutions through a CFD system and comparing it to the results of the solutions they themselves have tried. To do those comparisons, they'll need everything to be on the same platform. Unless they run a new test, the only data they'd have for their coanda 1.0 solution would be from last year's chassis, or at best an earlier rendition of the W04.

To be fair Red Bull did the same last year by introducing a new concept at the final test, its aggressive but big gains could be found. Regarding trying last years concept? please no, that was the worst update of the f1 2012 season.

I can bet you that every team will have applied a "backwards integration of interfaces to verify theoretical constructs".
Does this mean mean every team suffers from obtuse thinking? No it doesn't.

Concurred.
You cannot plaster on an exhaust before running it through CFD. Thats how it works.
First you need to understand how it works and why. Once these have been learnt, you can apply it judicously through a CFD system that has been updated and correlated to give you reliable data from various exhaust iterations.
Given how the W03 had such a narrow operational window, this is why they have opened up the W04 to be able to be compliant with a wider range of exhaust options.

There is an AmuS article that explains the differences between the McLaren And RB exhaust solutions.

The article appears to suggest (via poor google translation) that the McLaren solution is superior under braking as the coke bottle air flow is better but the RB solution is better under acceleration out of corners as the exhaust plume is more accurately directed.

http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/form ... 55833.html

So it's highly likely Merc want to test both solutions to see if either give a net gain and shouldn't be passed off as not knowing the way forward. Seems there's probably little to choose between either solution and will be a case of which better suits the style of the drivers.

Sory but Red Bull did that only because their previous concept was banned by FIA, Newey talked about that, so they needed to find another quick solution. It's not same excuse if FIA ban you something two weeks before first tests with when you have almost half year to find good solution for the car performances and you dont do that

I did read the article, I just says that they found 2 seconds compared to the old car of 3 seconds they wanted to find.

That statement is without a quote, nor numbers how they allegedly found those two seconds or anything.
I would say that this part is speculation without a real quote from someone who is involved...

But anyway if its true, good for them.

It's all pretty much speculation. Far too early to say they are repeating last year's mistake. Far too early to claim a 2 second gain. All we know is that they have a car with 4 wheels that goes around a track.
