The thing is the longer you run the harder it is to reproduce what you did, than if you run three or four laps. It's all about manipulating variables, if you keep the runs short it becomes easy to conduct studies because there are less changes to account for, such as degrading tires and changing fuel load, not to mention track conditions can change.
