Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Most of the downforce is achieved by the FW, floor and Rear Wing.

the coanda exhaust makes up to about 20% in the best case.
The coanda exhaust are only 20% as strong as the EBD's of 2011. Far from making 20% of the overall car down-force.

Is that an antenna on the left mirror? I've never noticed that before.

They took it off last week too; am i wrong saying the monkey seat ensures a bit more of downforce?

Just noticed that Redbull are running without the monkey seat too.

Maybe they found some extra downforce and they don't need it anymore ...

Well, I think dowforce is always priceless, especially in circuits like this

Downforce has to be balanced. They may have found the downforce that was generated by the monkey seat elsewhere at the rear. Taking it off maintains the balance of the car and also, hopefully, reduces the drag too. If they increased rear downforce and kept the monkey seat without being able to increase front downforce then the car wouldn't be as fast.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

I really don't get why people on this forum have such a hard-on for monkey seats.

They provide VERY LITTLE downforce and LOTS of drag (~0.01CL and ~0.015CD. For comparison, cars have ~3.5-4.5CL and 1.0-1.4CD total). This makes their efficiency (which is the main target for aero setups) very poor. Their main use in on circuits where drag is not important (i.e Monaco) and to provide stability to a rear wing if the design causes separation under certain conditions.

Finally a precise tech answer, thanks!
