Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Any expectations? I'm guessing a few bits around the rear.

Should we expect the passive DRS?

I expect some (aero) updates (testing a new coanda system, Brawn said they have to fine tune that area.). Not so sure about DRS, because it's very hard to make it work properly, but maybe they will run it during FP.

That's what I'm guessing, to see the DRS in free practice. There wasn't as much development work with the DRS during winter testing as I expected, so I wonder if many teams will run it.

Interesting how busy this thread is. Not sure the Merc has had this much interest pre-season - the McLaren normally does. I wonder if there are a few undeclared Hamilton fans that have moved across with him and are now keen to see the car do well.

Certainly, I'm interested to see how it does in Oz. I'm hoping that Mercedes (read Hamilton, for me) can give McLaren a good run. If Hamilton feels like he's got a chance then it could all get very interesting this year...but he'll have to watch Nico too. Could be some fireworks there.

Anyway, back to the car - I'm interested to see if/how they amend the front wing this season having taken so long to bring this version to the track. Also, will they run the coanda exhaust all season or will they feel the need, for thermal reasosn, to revert to the old exhaust at certain hot races? Also, the rear passive DRS system (the snorkel under the rear wing, whatever you want to call it) - will it be a regular feature? I think they're better off concentrating on getting the basic car up to speed before they play with the toys.

I think this car might just be the dark horse that the Renault (sorry, still can't call it a Lotus) was last year.

Here's to the season!

I'm guessing you missed last year -- the W03 pre-release speculation thread went to over 200 pages! That's more than most of the other car theads generated over the entire season! Rather I think this year has been fairly tempered from Merc fans. Like other Merc fans I think we will go into this year with severely conservative expectations.

The angle of the W04 FW upper-cascades seems to be the most flat of any of the teams. My expectation is for them to deepen the cascade in a similar way as is seen on the Lotus.

I think the drivability is not about the amount of torque output, but rather, how smooth the curve would be - allowing the drivers to have a predictable throttle response. I remember a while ago Barrichello said that the Honda was very bad in drivability terms, so much so that he didn't really have the confidence to push in traction zones, scared of wheelspin, because the peaks were sudden.
he also said, that the crosworth was bad in that regard. out of the sudden you got the full torque and you feel like been kicked by an elephant.

I think Mercedes is like Toyota was 5 years ago when they just couldn't get the respect. I remember everyone saying they just needed a top 5 driver like Alonso. Now that Mercedes pulled the trigger on Lewis and Co., there is no more excuses. I'm not a Mercedes fan but look forward to see if we have top 5 teams battling each race as opposed to only 2 top teams really in the hunt.

Interesting? Go look at the older Merc threads; they're always huge if not the biggest. Hell, the team threads exist because of us Silver Arrow lovers and haters. ;)

Dang it, I'm seriously jonesing for some photos of the car in Australia. Has anyone found any yet? I've been looking with no luck. I think every other thread has them now except for RBR and Merc.

Help us Forza-Wan Kenobi, you're our only hope.

Deja-vu, i would say. I remember Haug saying after China GP 2012: "Who are the ones having issues with the tyres? Not us!" - we all know what happened later in the season. But surely, i DO hope they got really good tyre management this year. [-o<

I think teams generally don't "open up" their garage until they're required by the regulations to so do. I'm not sure if that happens on Thursdays or Fridays, though.
