I'm not sure Lewis could have coped well with yet another sub-par McLaren. I doubt he has as many regrets as he had 2 days ago... I was interested that he said the team have exposed either setup options or in-car adjustments to him that McLaren apparently never even told him were possible (recent interview, can't find link) - wonder what they'd be.
Suspension settings, he can now have a choice of soft, medium or hard. Macca only allowed Hard or V.Hard. :)

Not sure how much he is pushing but the car goes where he points it.

Still a tiny bit of understeer, minimal fighting anywhere for themost part though.

Little late on the throttle in some places, but that might be just taking it a little easy rather than the car.

Now look at how on the edge Vettel was.

it looked like he almost put it in the sand exiting turn 6.

But at the same time check 1:13 for how much confidence he has in the car.......

He's got his eyes fixed on the apex of turn 12, before he even reaches the apex of turn 11........

Then again, he doesn't really seem to care about apexing turn 11.

Lewis nails the first apex and manages to straightens up the car earlier, but carries less consistent speed through the corners and has to use kers to exit turn 12 with the same kind of acceleration seb does with no kers at all.

Turns 11-12, more consistent speed through the apexs.

Turn 13, same thing. Drops less kph.

But check turn 13. The Red Bull drops 10kph less through that turn alone.

So maybe the Merc does indeed still need more downforce?

The world must be crazy, now Mercedes looks like last season Mclaren(well, not so good but it seems to be a quite driveable and fast car) and Mclaren look out of the pace like the WO3. Absolutely a nonsense.

GrizzleBoy wrote:Has anybody else noticed the distinct lack of vanes on the floor where basically every other team has them, ahead of the rear wheels?

They had really long, uniquely shaped ones during the test, and now they've disappeared altogether.

I'm pretty sure we all assumed that those vanes assisted in not allowing exterior flows to mess with the McLaren style coanda exhaust system once the gases reach the floor.

So why the total removal?

The function of the vane is not directly related to exhausts, as discussed some days ago in the lotus e21 thread, as they were mounted on cars before coanda exhausts were adopted (see early lotus e20 as example). I gree with you in that is very strange for them to pass from having the bigger strake / vane to not having it at all. To me it seems they are not yet satisfied with the interaction of the two vortices in that zone (the one from the strake and the one from the diffuser footplate) and they have decided to work up just one of the two (footplate) and get almost rid of the other by removing the strake.

What I find interesting in the top view, that I had not noticed before, is that it seems that the front leg of the rear upper wishbone has the exterior layer laminated in unidirectional carbonifiber: very unusual to see, as we always see the chequers of fabric weaves.
