All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Does anybody know if the Cosworth DFV had four bolt or six bolt main caps? i.e. does it have additional main cap bolts that come in from the side of the block rather than the bottom?

Can somebody please explain to an idiot what's so good about this engine?

I have heard lots about it in the past but never knew why it was considered so good.

Well, I'll explain one idiot to another ;)

10 drivers titles
12 constructors titles
2 LeMans wins

The DFV simply re-wrote the rules of engine/chassis integration. Not only that, it was so well designed that it remained competetive for many many years (naturally it was developed) retaining the same basic architecture.

I think I'm right in saying that the DFV carried on winning championships right up to the Williams FW07 in 1980.

A brilliant piece of inspiration and detail design.

Dominant out of the box and remained so.

I've been reading alot about pre 80s F1 reacently and it's increadable how much the DFV, Clark ran a DFV Lotus in '68 and probably should have got the title that year but saddly he died after just one race, his protege Jackie Stewart (OBE) however, rather than accept a seat at Mantra racing, had his F3 teamboss, Ken Tyrell, start a team connected to mantra using their chassis and a DFV engine. 3 world titles followed with that engine and he became the most successful British driver in history. The DFV was not retired for nearly 20 years!!! (in perspective Petronas engines, the modern customer choice engine, lasted five years I think)

Yep, Jackie won with the DFV on it's first race out---Zandvoort, if memory serves.

Typo? Jimmy took the DFV debut win at Zandvort, at the time JYS was tooling around in the BRM H-16 (if tooling around is ever a term you could apply to the great man ;))
