Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

No, but go back to your team thread if you don't like Merc. I can't understand why haters write on others threads, finally we get a win and we can't be happy?

Not completely. Monaco has very low wear, to the point where you can probably finish the complete race on the same hard tyre that only lasted 15 laps in Barcelona. It looked though like Mercedes had even less problems with tyre wear then most other teams.

I believe they are very, very sensitive to changes in the wear level. If the wear level of a circuit increases, mercedes theirs will increase much more then the average car. If it decreases, Mercedes theirs will decrease much more then the average.

This is the car thread, not the team thread.

eh ? I asked a real question, i wasnt actually hating or trying to come off as i was hating. I was actually asking, and as it was a question regarding the car and how it manages the tyres i posted it here.

And for the record im not a fan of any team and im very glad merc won today cause it does speice things up but i dont believe they will be able to do it again.

Apologies mate.
They've changed rear suspension geometry and added a second cover to the gearbox to help the tyre wear.
After the pitstop, Nico's race engineer told him his tyres had 50-60% of their life: sounds a bit strange, even if they wanted to do a 33-35 SS stint they could have pushed harder

I suspect that that was actually a cover to put the other teams off. Hamilton clearly was out of tyres at the end of the race. Admittedly, he was fighting Webber hard, but I think that Merc were in clear 1 stop territory, but not much further than the 30 laps required for that.

Yeah well Hamilton ruined his tyres being aggressive and i guess he could cause you cant get past at Monaco anyways unless you leave room like Alonso or totally run out of tyres.

More on the "F2004" style gearbox casing from F1.com
Image

The main drawing shows the new building technique used by Mercedes this year that allows them to move their car's rear suspension pick-up points - normally attached directly to the gearbox casing - without having to change the gearbox itself and thus incur a penalty. Drawing inspiration from the Ferrari F2004 (inset), on which a carbon skin was attached to the titanium gearbox casing in order to increase stiffness, Mercedes have in effect built two casings. The inner one is the actual gearbox casing, made from titanium, while the outer one is made from carbon and serves as the attachment for the suspension pick-up points. Being able to move the pick-up points at will gives the team more flexibility in terms of rear suspension set-up as they bid to get the best out of Pirelli's 2013 tyres.

Maybe others have not suffered the same tyre woes to the same extent as Mercedes-AMG has.......................

I agree it's a simple and elegant solution. The potential gains far outweigh the weight penalties of the carbon parts and metal pick-up points.

Cos Costa did it 10 years ago back in Ferrari?
Mind you, it took the team 15 attempts for it to pass the crash test..

Don't Audi have the same system on the R18? I believe it's so that if they damage the rear suspension they can change it quickly without having to change the gearbox (which would be illegal).

Don't forget that the cf coating for the gearbox must be thick enough to withstand the suspension forces going through it..this will add weight higher up where other teams use that weight as ballast low down..it will result in a higher CoG

Can they reduce the thickness of the original gearbox casing to compensate?

They actually have an advantadge in using a lighter gearbox
