Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The team seems to have done a lot better since doing this

Thinking it through some possible ways the steel belted tyre would run hotter than Kevlar is:

1. lower overall heat transfer coefficient
2. Higher heat generation (more movement in the rubber and belt interface and flexing of the belt possibly?)
3. Lower Heat capacity says the steel is heat up more rapidly -

Notice that If the kevlar with its higher heat capacity is used, Mercedes will take longer to heat up the tyres in qualifying, but at the same time the higher heat capacity will hold more energy within the tyres. The tyre will be a better storer of energy. This will help during track temperature changes.. and it will also help after running off the racing line. Overall it will give Mecerdes and even more so, RedBull a strong advantage.

That was interesting, I find the comments about them being hand made, and variable kind of interesting. for the cost, you would think pirelli would be providing matched sets with very tight tolerances.

Any idea of costs compared to other tyres?

The tyres are about Β£1350 per four wheel set I believe.

not bad pricing actually. Almost the same as run flat road tyres.

Along with pylons, Vanity (modesty) panel is now smoother. Or is it just me?

The pylons look like the Ferrari ones, I assume the wider spacing will be helpful for flow down to the T-Tray and yes the vanity panel is quite a bit smoother.

ACK.
Although I still don't understand why the upper side is rounded. I would guess that this induces spillage to the sides.

Interestingly, they say that if you mount the tyres on the wrong way around, the inner shoulder is still on the inside as the wheel can only be mounted in one way.

This begs the question: How can Pirelli cite this as a way of the shoulder cutting? Surely if the wheels were on the right way, they would still suffer from shoulder cutting.
