I think I just saw Massa running the older, shorter exhaust. I might be wrong though, since I am watching the FP through a stream.

You did. he's running the Barcelona spec car. Alonso, Silverstone.

either they know what they're doing and are only comparing, or they are completely lost and the upgrades are worthless...

Yes! Beacuse i saw identical on HRT video.


EDIT1:
I also share the same opinion with guys who thinks that graining marks are just minor polishing or grinding spots. Also could be wear spots from stones, marbles or sand "erosion". But so even and intentional pattern like is in this case i don't see that could be the case.
