Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

So is this not the same for Mercedes? I've not seen pictures under the engine cover to prove/disprove this
If you look at the current Mercedes car there is no such opening on the top. They cool the gearbox in a different way, maybe using the sidepods or the small hole over the drivers head, but I think the first one is the solution.

Surely if the larger hole was for the passive drag reduction it would be blocked when not in use?

Merc boys not so happy with the current tyre change coz in FP3 all of them has had imbalance problems : Rosberg reporting under-steer and Hamy a over steer car and that after they had almost 12 hours of analysis and setup changes ...

Now Toto went philosophical and said that they are not extracting all of the new tyres yet ...

It is simply not there, look at pictures from the previous races.

Did they run the new rear wing for the race?
Another thing is their AoA setup for the rear wing coz in speed traps they were only 300km/h and RBR were ony 299 !?! ...
They are copying RBR setup strategy or the reason is just the latter stepping up their game and now with the kevlar belt tyres they are unleashing their full DF levels hence opting for a very small rear wing or AoA ? ...

Mercedes were running a different engine cover from the new one they introduced in Canada. Is it due to the higher temperatures?

Comparing the picture above of the W04 at speed and the pic below of the W04 on its in lap, we can see how much the front wing angle of attack shifts as the rear of the car squats under aero load.

They seem to not be running the revised engine cover introduced at Silverstone, I wonder if cooling venting is more of an issue at this circuit.

it is much warmer in this region compared to last week, plus the Nurburgring has lower overall speeds.
