Ferrari F138 - Monza-spec front wing

ImageImage

Ferrari, like Red Bull, removed the upper flaps attached to the front wing endplate to reduce downforce (and therefore drag), but also to reduce the effect of turbolence from other cars. In place of the upper flaps, Ferrari introduced two vertical fins to better manage the airflow to the central section of the car.

I am not sure exactly if this photo is from FP3 or Quali, but today Massa indeed used the new diffuser. Maybe he only used it in FP3, but I doubt it. Usually FP3 specification is what they use in Quali. Problem is I'm finding it hard to find good pic of the rear in Quali.

I have found this pics about quali and I've tried to light it up in the diffuser zone. Can you recognize if they have used old or new diffuser?

Crucial, i'm sure that your image is of the FP2. Look at the rear wing: they have used it in Fp1 and 2. In the Fp3 Alo and Mas have used the "Spa" version (without "V" cutting).
So, the image posted by Blackswan really explain what they have used: old diffuser.
My personal idea: on friday Ferrari has tested the longer exhaust (first Massa and then Alonso). In Fp3 (and qualy/race) they have run with the shorter. So, i suppose that new diffuser was planned for longer exhaust. And i think that Ferrari has tested it for the next race (Singapore new aero-package???).

ps: not only the diffuser is new, but the floor too: they have removed the 3 vertical strakes under the rear axle. I'm waiting best images to see it fully (i would see tyre squirt and slot too).

The image I posted is from today according to F1-Direct and it's dated for today's date. They don't have a reputation for posting FP2 pictures the following day. Obviously I can't say with certainty that Felipe used the new diffuser in Quali, but I'm convinced he at least used it in FP3.
As for the 3 vertical strakes under the driveshaft cowl, the picture is far too dark to discern whether they're there or not, even with photoshop.

I have seen all the FP3 and Qualifying and i'm sure that Felipe (and Nando) have used the "fp Spa" rear wing (this: http://i.imgur.com/4Po0Qik.jpg) and shorter exhaust. So, i think that the image that you've posted is of friday FP2. (different rear wing). It doesn't seems to me that Massa have change rear wing during the FP3...
But best solution is wait other photo of qualy and race! [-o<

ps: about the vertical strakes, look at this picture (posted by Stefan at 3:36 pm on friday): http://i.imgur.com/4E5UNl9.jpg. There aren't! (note the rear wing too - FP2, Massa's penality).

Other photos (Amus):
Alo, Mass, qualy (it's too black for diffuser... but note the rear wing): http://img1.auto-motor-und-sport.de/Fer ... 716769.jpg
Vertical strakes on Massa's car (old diffuser/floor): http://img4.auto-motor-und-sport.de/Fer ... 716785.jpg
Vertical strakes on Alonso's car (old diffuser/floor): http://img3.auto-motor-und-sport.de/Fer ... 716801.jpg

Good effort on the F138. An excellent #2 car.
That's why felipe did that! he was loosing his drive either way, and at this point he is only making himself look bad, by being slower/ lack of balls ect!

Team's photos aren't very useful, either. The official photo stream from Scuderia always has high contrast and details are hard to spot, unless you play for some time with the image.

This is Massa from Qualifying session: full zoom crop, with some adjustments. Still, I find it hard to spot the difference.

That thing seems rounded where it used to be squared, to me...
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

It's NOT photo on qualifying!!! Alonso and Massa have used different rear wing in FP3 and Qualy (this: http://i.imgur.com/Ds0If5D.jpg). Your photo is the same of Xtreme Crucial and i'm sure that's of FP2 (friday).

Alonso and Massa used the old diffuser in both qualifying and race...
I personally believe they tried an improved version of it in the free practice sessions but that will be for the next races not for this particular one (Monza)
