Red Bull RB9 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

They ran a new piece on the front wing today, haven´t seen any pictures from it but Kravitz reported it during the broadcast of either FP1 or FP2.

Looks something like this.

Two front wings try. Different upper flap. https://twitter.com/Pjdona/status/386209656710123520 Different shape of beam wing (Singapore Vs Korea). https://twitter.com/Pjdona/status/386214626855514113

Yes, it is quite strange. It can't be regular airflow, and it even looks hotter then the sidepod-entrance. Certainly something mechanical/electronical running there. The way the heat pattern is shaped also doesn't look like that it comes from scraping the t-tray to the ground.
Supercaps do look to be the right size and shape, and Red Bull is the only team known to be using it (other teams just use lithium-ion battery packs). The heat signature fits it.

Can somebody tell me if, the kers stuff aside, a heated t-tray brings (aerodynamic) benefits?
They could split the hot air and create a constant skirt bearing in mind that hot blowing has less influence this year and most of all it doesn't been anymore a constant flux over the turn ...

Another matter: RB9 doesn't have a break bias adjuster?

New rear wing only for Vettel. Both cars with new extra profile on front wing :wink:

That's because Webbers car is set up for more topspeed. He has to overtake lots of cars tomorrow.

The two new vertical flaps have a very aggressive aoa to the loacl flow - they will generate a vortex rotatin in the opposite sens to the enplate top vortex. I do not know whe this will be useful

Note the twist in the two strakes along their span /height, and the saw tooth shape of the trailing edge of the diffuser to phase flow passing below the floor (earlier on the outside, later on the inside).

Even if perspective in pictures is tricky, these shots, especially the second one, seem to suggest that the exhausts flow inside of the inner strake, given that the bulk flow is generally to the inside in the coke bottle above the floor (excpet for the 5-cms on the outboard edge which spill out - trated by specific slots before the wheel. (see also f138 flow viz in Singapore)

So it could be that the outer strake marks the split line between flow on the outside and on the inside of the rear tire, and develops a first vortex;
the inner strake is on the boundary between flow around the sidepod that does not get ingested bt the "bridge" and the exhaust; also the second strake forms a vortex that is kept staggered from the first by the floor trailing edge shape;
the exhaust flows on the inside of the inner strake , and goes down in between the dowwash from these two vortices on the wheel side, and the footplate vortex on the floor side, accelerating the 3 vortices increasing helicity.

Maybe.

Very interesting "nozzle" on the edge of the diffuser.
