They don't necessarily want them as high as possible any more though. Wanting them as high as possible is an emergent behaviour of the 2009-2013 rules. It may well be that the optimum is different under the 2014 rules.
I read they still want to get max air under the car with max high and "hollow" or thin noses. Because Diffuser regs stay the same like 2009-2013.
So they are desperate to compensate the beam wing loss and the lost high noses, I think we will see very extreme nose variants.
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

- No Beam Wing (Besides direct DF this will noticeably influence diffuser efficiency).
- No EBD.
And all this coming from a relatively rear limited Regulation era (Narrow rear wings, wide and low front wings) anyway.
The exhaust itself will generate a little thrust over the rear wheel centre line (edit: some people might call that an axle #-o).
With the exhaust harnessing going on, the flow will not be very energized at all, and it is in a relatively "aero neurtral" section of the car with no body work allowed behind it.

Sorry, this is getting off topic. I'll reply in 2014 Design

I have heard the same thing. The noses may be lower but the teams will want to make the underside of the chassis as high as possible beneath the front bulkhead. This is why the noses may be ugly because the chassis height will remain as high as possible, at 625mm, before suddenly descending just before the front bulkhead to 525mm, and then down to the nose at 185mm. This will produce a large step but a vanity panel can cure this issue.

The airflow would have to be navigated around the nosecone and into this area beneath the front bulkhead to continue forcing flow into the splitter. High noses obviously do this a lot better. I would like to imagine that we could see the McLaren MP4-25 "snow plough" (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Tjso1eLNXW0/S ... le_717.jpg) but in reverse and just before this space beneath the chassis. It would take airflow from around the nosecone inwards.

edit:
(scarbs shoul have taken astracrazy's design to make it even more shocking for the readers (but maybe it is not legal), and as the shown design is on the autosport.com front page it should be legal..?)

oi, nothing wrong with my design lol

i think that picture is slightly out, the main body (part of the nose) will need to slope down further more. That gives the impression that the noses will stay high (525) with a 'semi' hanging down :?

3.7.9 No bodywork situated forward of the line A-A referred to Drawing 5 may extend above a
diagonal line from a point on A-A and 625mm above the reference plane to a point 50mm
rearward of the forward-most point of the impact absorbing structure defined in Article 15.4.3
and 300mm above the reference plane. No bodywork situated forward of the forward-most
point of this diagonal line may be more than 300mm above the reference plane

I have no problem with this kind of nose, as long it is called the "Blanchimont-type"-nose or shorter the "B-type"-nose.
Please stick to this term from now on if you talk about this nose!

We'll see if this term will make it to the 2014 paddock!
Dear FIA, if you read this, please pm me for a redesign of the Technical Regulations to avoid finger nose shapes for 2016! :-)

I could not stop laughing for quite a while after seeing the latest rendering of the B-type nose

sadly now the dark possibility to see such a nose on a couple of cars in '14 has sunken in....
