A shameless image thread for the enginephiles

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

In the Jordan 192, the engine was a dog btw, 60 valves not doing much good at all;

I remember doing a model of a piston crown (for Audi) with 5 valve technology -in my apprenticeship as modelmaker -must have been something for a rally or race engine in the late 80s it did not really look right to me ,honestly.
back then nobody did 3d CADCAM so they had amazing panthopraph milling machines wher you followed contours with a contact finger and the milling machine did follow your path on the other end....how things went on in those years..

After trying the V12 in the Brabham BT60Y, terrible, they turned to a V10;

This worked a little better in the Tyrrell, but it was really a Judd.

Yamaha was really a proxy for Toyota, a fact finding foray into F1, beginning in the late 80s with a 40-valve V8;

This engine was raced by Zakspeed in 1989, without much success either. Note the badging on the valve-cover.

Notice none has mentioned the BMW M88 motor.
Pretty sure there are a few members who have experienced this power plant and what a game changer it was back in the 80s when I was a wee lad.

Fabulous straight six sound(if you care for such things).

And of course....we cannot mention the M88 if we do not mention the 6.1 litre V12 as used in the F1 Macca.

I'm not sure if it's me, but BMW seems to have gained inspiration from Darth Vader in designing the engine.
The dark side reside within those (engine)walls I swear it!

And here are the sonorous delights of the gold lined BMW engined death star...I mean McLaren, should anyone care to be treated thus.

My combustion engine professor had us calculate all the important outputs (power, torque, fuel efficiency) from that exact engine in our final exam - a bit concerning when you spend the entire semester on road car engines and then get a monster like that one.
I'll be adding my pics as soon as I find them, mainly from the Ferrari Museum, Deutsches Museum in Munich, and some scans from the engine script we used...this is a brilliant thread, xpensive!

Your combustion professor deserves a high five for that. 8)

Speaking of V12's from Deutchland, here is my own personal favourite.
The M120 from yup, you guesed it.... Mercedes.
7.3 litres of engine Valhalla.

It began service in the S600 Grosse wagen, then powered the CLK-GTR and then found it's way to Pagani via an alleged strong relationship with one Juan Manuel Fangio(he of Mercedes folklore).
