AMD vs Intel for CFD computing

Our partners for computer hardware are HP and IBM. Our CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) models are usually the most computationally expensive, so for these we typically use an IBM Blade cluster system, with several thousand AMD processors. Cluster efficiency is controlled by automated scheduling and management software from Platform Computing. Both hardware suppliers work with MSC to ensure that the Nastran and Adams products are also tuned for optimal computational performance on their systems.

I would think they would have moved to Intel platforms from AMD not long after that article was published. That's the biggest opimisation you can make there.

Intel have long since surpassed AMD in raw processing power several times over in all the areas that matter sadly and you're going to save an awful lot more versus paying software engineers large sums fiddling about with compilers for little, if any, benefit.

Processing power is still limited per rules. so other than (maybe) an power consumption advantage there isn't any. Which will be wasted if you upgrade like every year.

It's a waste of money that gives no computing advantage whatsoever.

In general desktop computing using standard FPU/Vector measurements Intel chips are faster but AMD powered HPC clusters generally use the "Fusion" style CPU-GPU chips now and the GPU elements are dramatically faster than Intel's traditional Xeon CPU's for HPC work!
