you just have to love that Lucas pre-engaged starter motor(on the BRM) all Mini ,Triumph and MG owners have learned to love over the years ....keep your fingers crossed it will start once more....on a wing and a prayer..never knew this was Formula 1 technology....

You mean there was no solenoid, that it was constantly engaged?

the lucas starter as illustrated does use the inertia of the starter motor to throw the gear into the flywheeltoothes ! there is a solenoid -placed remotely but only as a means of closing the big amps battery cables circuit to start the motor!
It certainly eats away both the starter gear as well as the flywheel teeth....

oh ,my bad i used the word pre engaged which is the other system with the solenoid mounted directly on the motor - pushing the gear into position before actually starting the motor ....sorry for the negligeance-i´m out of business with these old dogs too long obviously ----what a slipup..

Yes it has 3 electric motors. One at every front wheel and one in the gearbox.
