Monaco track and its specifics, images

Post

Hi all,

I've been to Monaco for quite some time on a work related matters, so I used the chance to do the track walk and get some images of cars running around, including some old F1 cars, so I decided to share some thoughts and images I've taken.

Two galleries I have created:
1. At Google Plus - should not ask for registration
2. At Facebook - again, a public one.

The pictures are done with very old digital 7.1 MP Canon camera, so quality isn't the best, but you get the point. Feel free to steal, share and remix them :)

Generally, as you would expect, the whole place is literally soaked with Formula 1. There are souvenir shops all around, F1 references are found even on the logos of the local construction companies, plaques and posters are literally everywhere, including yachts and promotional offers to watch the race from a helicopter!

I have been a very stark critic of the track itself - simply because it doesn't allow enough overtaking. I have been very vocal for track re-shaping, but I saw from first hand that this is a tough task. With population of about 40,000 people living at 2 square kilometers, this is the most densely populated country, and literally every inch has been used - either for buildings of for beautiful palm trees and gardens. So, tough one.

I also had the chance to speak with some prominent F1 figures over there, but the only thing I can share for now is that BMW aren't interested in coming back to F1. There is a healthy interest in Formula E, however.

The track notes
The first impression you get is that it is very easy to make a mistake. The track is flowing very fast, as you all know, and the surroundings, such as nice buildings and yachts can easily get you distracted. F1 drivers do not suffer of that often, still, it is a different challenge than any other circuit. The Beau Rivage uphill section and the Pool are especially nice. It is very easy to miss the braking point after you get out of the tunnel. And then the carousel of turns and events gets you again. From a driver point of view it is certainly impressive, but not so much from a spectator point of view.
I'll be adding more later. Be sure to check out galleries, there are some close shots of MP4-22, BAR Honda, Kimi's Mclaren and Lotus.

I attended the last Monaco Historics event and have to say, for the casual fan who cannot afford one of the premium seating areas or doesn't know someone with an apartment overlooking the track, the viewing experience is quite disappointing.

Blue tarps affixed to chain link fences are everywhere to deny even a peek at most of the track and the same chain link fence in front of most grandstands makes getting good photos impossible. The best views of the racing are on your big screen at home in your living room.

Next time, I am going to bring my mega-yacht!

But just being in Monaco is worth the trip. The place is a must see for everyone at least once in your lifetime. And if you get a chance to go for a drive in the Alps nearby? Oh, my....... \:D/
