Mercedes F1 W05 Pre-launch Speculation

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

If you want to go outwash this yeah that you need much deeper endplates which cuts down the effective area of the front wing. McLaren almost got it to work in 09 so now the FW is narrower there's a good chance they will try again.

As long as no bodywork is visible from beneath the car AFAIR...

And that´s looking up through the hole completely vertically and no degrees?
Is the purpose for the cutoff to get more air to the underside of the floor or is there some other function?

It's similar to the slots in front of the rear wheel, only this one is a bit more crude

"Mercedes engineers were VERY surprised to see Ferrari run their engine in the back of a 458"?? It was a LaFerrari, for a start. And the fact that it was running a 2014 F1 engine is only a hypothesis... I would take this bad rumors about Mecedes with a grain of salt. I prefer to believe Martin Whitmarsh...

I'm not sure it's that bad, also the car Ferrari were using to test the engine was definitely not a 458.

That's only because Mercedes expect to be able to run the engine no problems when they bolt it to a car...

That Ferrari engine sounded fcked... Mapping was messed up and and needed lots of tuning.

All the talk in that article from Fry about finding the innovative little tricks that give a lot of downforce gives me hope for Merc, they've got so many former TDs with so much experience that if their is something special like the DDD in 09 I imagine Merc have already thought about it.

what kind of crap blog is that? It wasn't a 458, not to mention running it in any car except an F1 chassis serves no purpose. A dyno lets them control the test parameters a lot more than any test car ever could, not to mention it would be a lot more efficient.

I believe I'd heard that was vetoed, but by whom I don't recall.

According to Autosport it was Mercedes:

"Efforts to bring forward a 10kg rise in the weight limit to 700kg, which has been agreed for 2015, have so far been thwarted by opposition from one team - believed to be Mercedes - because unanimous support is required to make the change now."

Right, apparently Red Bull/Newey desperately want the weight cap raised. Bearing that in mind, Mercedes would be nuts to go along with anything they don't need themselves. "Merry Xmas, Newey. Enjoy the veto! Sorry we forgot to wrap it!"
