No this is the final nail in the coffin. I can't watch this gimmick --- anymore. I started following Formula One when it was real racing, a sport for sportfans. Today, well, Don't even get me started. Can't take this --- seriously anymore.

For the audience, and therefore business, it is desirable to determine the champion as late as possible - preferrably in the last race. Doubling the points of the last race would certainly leave the outcome of the championship open for a bit longer, even if the season is being dominated by one driver. It is artificial, but it will keep the audience excited for longer whilst the money keeps flowing.
In addition to the extended suspense, one might speculate that higher fees could be demanded from the hosting country and maybe even from the TV companies for their licenses to air the last race. Milk the cow as much as you can.
Now if you milk the cow as much is possible it can get really bad and even due some-sort exhaustion kill it (really it happens on farms regularly). Now we could that common sense knowledge simply applied it on F1 world; "Congratulation your cow is officially dead. =D> " (this was no personal attack just throw out my feelings in that situation)
