A shameless image thread for the enginephiles

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Here is an article by Alan Cathcart about the ultimate Garagista of the motorcycle world, John Britten. The engine isn't the most beautiful thing in the world, but the specs are considering he and his mates built the whole thing themselves. All the carbon and fiberglass layup for this bike was done by hand in his garage and shop. He built the wheels himself. One wonders what he may have accomplished if his life wasn't cut short by skin cancer.

Great read on the Britten! The engine/chassis set-up is pretty cool, especially the rear spring/damper.

Porsche was almost back in Le Mans in 2000 with that V-10 engine... It would have been something to see that Porsche LMP1 racing against the Audi R8 not yet FSI.

610cc Engine, Turbo Compound, Formula Student
by Gegov

This is my first model upload, I am a second year Mechanical engineering student and this is one of my left over engine design attempts, this is a very unfinished 610cc Turbo Compound engine for a small car ( also some bits are quite fictional - the cylinder cam valves controlled by electric motors ) . It took quite some time and its still work in progress.

I have been a user of Deviant art for many years now , but I never really had the guts ... and well the time to upload anything, so this is my first item. As you can probably tell from the image I am actually an Engineer by degree ( on going ) and I work using CAD packages ( this was done in solidworks ).

As for the engine in the picture, this is a custom 610cc 6 cylinder boxer turbo compound engine, yes a bit of a mouth full.

Oh mama, but what in the world is the application for Carlo Chiti's old design, anyone?

Brilliant stuff below CBeck, that casting below is nothing less than engineering porn;

i can't think of anything more awesome then giant ship engines. they're.....just awesome. they don't have to be technologically advanced. but man. there's something about a piston with 1 m diameter.
