Caretaking at the first tests, maybe ?
Yeah I think this will be his role now. Remember Ron said we will find out about the Team Principal next month.

It depends on what they pay. I doubt McLaren will give them prime space for free - at least in the past they've preferred to leave a spot blank rater than hand out freebies. I think when Diageo was given the sides, they had worked out a 1-year deal with an increased fee - probably not what they would have paid as title sponsor, but surely more. The reason I think that is because Diageo was in fact in talks with McLaren to be the title sponsor, but Vodafone got the deal instead. So they were certainly willing to pay more for the side pod, just not as much as Vodafone.

Certainly that, and perhaps a one-year stint as TP until The Intended is free to join the team.

I hope.

But if they do pick him as TP, I'd have to keep an open mind, even though I'm skeptical. I mean, he has to have impressed someone at McLaren to have been given the position he's in now. It seemed when they hired him after he got the boot from Williams that it was almost an act of pity. His original job description made it sound as if he was going to be sweeping up after the races, and indeed for a while he looked like he was hanging around looking for something to do.

Sorry, thought I'd kept up with this thread since it started, must've missed that one.

23 January 2014, a day which demonstrates that behind the scene Mclaren is quietly strenghtening. (areas of sporting decisions and marketing options)

1. A brave move, to promote Stoffel Vandoorne as reserve driver. Even if he is less than a year in Mclaren, he proved to be very fast and mature ( he was runner up, but the points that separeted him from Magnussen were largely because of bad luck and reliability problems with his car). He had last year a better FIRST season than Magnussen (2012) in Renaul 3.5 Series.
I really hope a Magnussen-Vandoorne partnership... if not in Mp4-30, than surely in Mp4-31 (Ron's coup means NO ALONSO IN MCLAREN, despite that he in a very diplomatic way said a few months ago that Alonso would be welcomed at Mclaren if can make them win... but... let's be realistic, Ron will never take back Alonso at Mclaren, whatever Mclaren's PR department will say. Ron is a strong man with a lot of qualities but his motto within Mclaren Group is "You cut yourselff... you bleed Mclaren", and he can't forget Alonso's blackmail before Monza 2007. Whatever he says to the press let's take it straight: for him Alonso is a traitor. Informations about Vandoorne as reserve driver: http://en.espnf1.com/mclaren/motorsport ... 42487.html

2. A very clever move in combination with Honda to nurture future talents by establishing a long term alliance with GP2 team ART: http://grandprix247.com/2014/01/23/mcla ... g-drivers/

3. Old and new sponsorhips/partnerships, new deal with Santander, corporate deal with Norton Rose Fulbright

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has backed the job that new sporting director Sam Michael has done for the team this year - and even suggested he could be the man to replace him in the future.
 :P

While Williams are hiring right people, this move in Mclaren is very dissapointing! I don't believe... I think it is a speculation and nothing more... just the media to have some work over the winter. :D

In addition to the Santander renewal, these guys have joined up as sponsors...

http://nortonrosefulbright.com/news/111 ... aren-group

And ART is partnering with McLaren and Honda for driver development - Takuya Izawa (Honda backed) and Stoffel Vandoorne will be their drivers this season.

Vandoorne has also been confirmed as McLaren's reserve driver.
