McLaren MP4-29 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

A couple of things have grabbed my limited attention 1st is the deep undercuts of the side pods, and a further undercut right above the floor, the 2nd is the how curved the barge boards are. Also in the 3d image it appears the be sawed toothed in the bottom part of the nose area

How do they not? What makes up the second cross section?
To be more precise, it's about a single open section.
The FIA says:

"1.20 Open and closed sections :
A section will be considered closed if it is fully complete within the dimensioned boundary to which it is referenced, if it is not it will be considered open."

At the line in red in the picture it could be that the section is closed, but probably i'm wrong and it just looks like that.

The nose is missing the legality fin, seen as the teardrop on the side of this CAD image. this is a common trick to join up the two sections to form a single section.

No the sidepods themselves are small:

The sidepods entrances are of course bigger due higher cooling needs, but they sidepods aren't much, if any at all, bulkier. Fantastic job by mclaren to stuff all the radiators and intercooler in those.

Compare it to previous iterations:

The Front wing is different than last year right ? Outer Sections of the Main Planes look split up like the Mercedes.

Looks like they will be using the suspension arms as a makeshift beamwing.

Yes from a first view, it's a >2 element front wing

The side pods look smaller because there is no need for the shape to house the coanda exhaust. The side pods don't look that small or large. Williams and Lotus look similar.

It looks more or less the same as the mp4-25.

I think you should take "small" into context. Given the extra needs coming with these cars, the sidepods do look small in width, but of course still bigger then previous year.
