Lotus E22 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Not much to be discerned from 2 renders that are clearly not the finished article but here's my thoughts: http://somersf1.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/ ... lysis.html

On the E22/MP4 29 comparison...
(unfortuantely we got jsut 3d renders for the Lotus, but I think they are fairly close to the real car, like the previous renders)

Cooling inlets seem A LOT smaller than mclaren's. Also, seems to have very little bulk at the rear end. Looks like a good car. I'm not sure how much is to be gained with the sabre toothed approach. The dual nose seems to be blocking twice as much air flow as the single snoz.

Wow! Regarding sidepod bulk I would consider this a clear 1:0 for the E22 vs. MP4-29 if the renderings are close to the real thing.

Regarding the nose I still remain somewhat unconvinced. It's interesting for sure but:
Double the blockage compared to the 'male' nose variants and due to the skirts I don't see how they will profit much from elevating the monocoque to the max height shortly behind the AA Line.
As always happy to eat my words.

So far I haven't seen a through and through convincing car to me.
My choice of the cars so far presented would be the general nose layout of the Williams (or probably FI) with the refinement and detail of the McLaren and the sidepods of the E22.

Will be interesting to see if we will see a car where you will immediately feel: That's it!.

McLaren render seems not to be accurate... rear suspension look differently.
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

The angle difference between the two pics makes the Mclaren look fatter than normal too

Hot! This has a good chance of actually happening since Maldonado is driving!
Finally, everyone knows that Red Bull is a joke and Max Verstappen is overrated.

There is certainly some image manipulation at the E22 nose.
Hope animation is self explaining.

Can we christen this nose "The Webber", if it turns out to not be bad for a number two?

Actually it means viewed from the front. Horizontal projection gives a vertical cross section.
No...horizontal projection means a projection made on a horizontal plane - which is a plane parallel to the x (and y) axis, or the horizont (all points have the same z coordinate). So, viewed from the top. You're confusing it with the term 'projected onto the horizont', which is not the same thing.
In the rule the cross section is defined as a vertical area. If it was horizontal the rule wouldn't make any sense. Think of it as looking at the car head-on, horizontally.
