Mercedes AMG F1 W05

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Can they do it such way that the modesty panel is also the FW holder?

That still looks low to me compared with the last years cars. Truth is, if it passes the test and conforms to the rules then there's nothing that can be done about it. If they end up without the tip during the race, they could be black flagged but that's up to the race director.

Haven't red bull successfully argued over the past few years that there is no such thing as "the spirit of the rules"?

Im failing to see how the Mercedes nose is not acceptable from a safety point of view, all the teams have the same crash structure (ant eater nose) some have just done clever things with vanity panels to get a better aero use out of it.

I think the point is during the test they do not accelerate to 300+ km/h... They are not worry about the crash, but that the nose will broke like it happen to Lewis.
The front wing fell off pretty early on so he was still going about 280 to 300 when he hit the tire barrier, you can't expect a lot of the front crash structure to stay intact after that.

Any conjecture that can be offered regarding blowing the underside of the now larger monkey seats? What sort of benefit might such an arrangement offer? 7-8 points?

So they are now using the regulation hards from Pirelli and not the cold weather special tires?

Some Informations directly from Rosberg about the Car and testing...

Q: It´s a rumor that the cars are slower... are there lower forces for the driver while driving?
A: "We don´t know by now because we are driving really slowly.
1. We don´t want to show the real potential of the car and it´s aerodynamics and the aerodynamics of the car is really crude. We just want to check the reliability.
2. The tires are hard as stones and we don´t get temperature in them. "

Q: How is it driving the "brake by wire system"? Do you feel confident braking?
A: "It´s complicated to describe. the front is a standard brake. Only the rear is nearly completely braked by the ERS. On high speeds you have plenty of downforce so you have a fully angaged rear brake. It´s like using the handbrake on a normal car.
When slowing down the car, the downforce is lower so you have to release the brake. To set this up is really complicated. The balance between the mechanical front and nearly completely electrical rear brake is key and complicated. At the moment it´s not perfectly adjusted. I don´t know what I´ve written but I hope you´ve understood :-)"

thats not 1:1 translation but I´ve translated the content.

For me the key points of his informations are:

- Aerodynamics are primitive at the moment.
- Tires aren´t working
- brake balance isn´t set up properly by now.

with the additional Information that they are running only up to 13krpm I think a 1:23:xxx lap is quite fast.
Compared to the 1:17:8 from Massa on soft tires (3 lap stint) last year.

What is the purpose for the vertical slit in the middle of the diffuser? Is it just a consequence of running the starter motor shaft through there or does it have any added benefits?

The don't have a starter motor hole anymore but they still have the flow from the sidepod outlets and coke bottle shape. So that's what the dip is trying to utilise.

Also, rake shot.

anymore there or anymore at all? If the latter, how do they start it up? I was under the impression that they never went through with the cars having the ability to start themselves up.

I can't see a starter motor hole on any car. They're all closed up, presumably as a backup.

FIA declares all noses to be legal (also the Mercedes one, just to please Richard and his off-topic phobia ;))
