Of the Mercedes cars Force india and MErc have the smallest side pods. Mac and williams appear to be starting out conservative.

The shapes off the sidepods make it very hard to tell differences in volume. It seems to me that McLaren and Williams have decided to keep the majority of the volume high in order to ease airflow round the sidepods.

You can definitely tell how much of an advantage it is to build your own engine (or be the nr1 works team) in terms of packaging.

I don´t think there´s a coincidence Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes are all considerably more tight then the pay teams.

Mclaren looks like they ducted their exhaust up higher, probably to keep it out of the way of their rear suspension arms.

I'm not certain this is an off the shelf part mercedes provides its customers.
They provide cooling requirements but I doubt they provide any cooling parts past the pumps, and even then not sure if they provide the pumps.

The tight packaging for the works teams is likely because the engines were designed hand in hand with the chassis, so both were made together. The satelite teams don't have that benefit. The get dimensions and cooling requirements and have to make them work.

Mclaren are adept enough to know x amount of heat requures x amount of cooling.
However mercedes do have a close affiliation with an american company whilst working on cooling for the W03 and 04. I think Cocles touched on this a while back.

Maybe the manufacturer links to these specialist companies also come in handy to make a very tight package allied to the benefits dren has mentioned.

Yea i think that´s really the key. Engine department and Aero/Car department working side by side.

Any team could run the engine cool, the question is what is the least amount of cooling that is needed to make it all work and how to deliver that in the smallest possible package.

More what is the optimal amount of cooling in order to get the best ratio between aerodynamics working well, and the engine being able to run at a suitable power level.

This is one of the reasons why we see teams changing body work every single race. Along with the obvious change in ambient temperature, the amount of power they need from the engine, and the importance of aero changes at each circuit.

A good image from Somers showing the U-Shaped diffuser on the W05 from the inside and not just from the rear. Will be interesting to see if Mercedes develop this area of the car further.

The hole definitely looks bigger in the front diagonal shot in the red circle compared to the rear shot. And it doesn't look as if it's because of the zoom.

flow separated from either side?

It seems W05 has separated either side but provided a clean and less aggressive underbody transition from the plank to the diff exit, whereas traditionally the flow from the plank transitions to a ramp which mates flow from either side of the underbody and plank. Benefits of individually managing either side of diffuser flow isn't something I've seen done before, so MB must know something to have reasoning to move forward with such a design. I like it.
