Lotus E22 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Look at the end of the car - part above floor - it's very interesting.

I hope those numbers from wind tunnel will be real on the track.

It looks like a deep V-cut, but actually there are 2 more rectangular panels over it.
Actual transparent bodywork

Sorry if this may have already been asked but... Why is the nose asymmetric?

Regulations dictate that the nose has a certain cross section of the nose 50mm back from the tip. It has to be a single section so they have the longer tusk meet this requirement and the other tusk starts after the mandated area.

Am I seeing 3 aligned radiators here ? fuel tank area must be very norrow if they managed to place the rads that way.

But the fuel tank is in the middle just behind the driver, how would that be affected by the rads ?

But the rads sit at each side of the part of the monocoque that hosts the fuel cell :) so the postionning of the rads can be affected by the width of that part.

It could just be part of a cover/protector for the wing/DRS flap, rather than bodywork - there's a black plastic hanger for something on the top left of the wing that's not bodywork - it may be part of the same thing...

Let's compare the two monocoques... not a big difference in the fuel cell area

This makes complete sense.
Last year they were using the space on the outer rear of the sidepod for the Exhaust.
For header and end piece, to use the downwash over the sidepods to blow and seal the diffuser sides.

even if it´s a caterham, you can see what I mean:

This year the header is much narrower and bends inwards to feed the turbo positioned in the middel.

So you don´t need the space behind and up on the radiator like last year but now you need it more into the middle of the car.
So they choose to flip the radiators to stand vertical to gain space in the middle of the car.
