There's those very long thin uprights in front of the gap between the floor and tyre that maybe creating vortices to seal the diffuser. It's the only thing I can think of.

Do you have to "seal" the diffuser for that amount of rake to be effective?
Ideally yes otherwise turbulence from the tyres can disrupt the flow in the diffuser and flow from inside the diffuser could spill out. All this could lead to the diffuser effectively switching on and off during running which would make the car very difficult/scary to drive. The rake could be misleading though. The Merc suspension is somewhat unique and it might just sit like that when stationary and it could squat a fair but under load by design as the interlinked/fric suspension tries to keep the car level. Hard to say for certain.

The two VGs on each sidepod look to line up with the rear brake ducts and area between the rear wheels and diffuser.

Most teams retained the strakes on the floor to allow some flow between the rear wheels and diffuser.

Gordon Mccabe has a very interesting article about this:
http://mccabism.blogspot.be/2011/08/dif ... -rake.html

Basicilly bigger rake does 2 things: increase the angle of the diffuser, increases downforce, but also increases height, decreases downforce.

Why does downforce decreases under a higher height? The edges of the diffuser generate vortices that energize airflow, sucking air more quickly out of the diffuser and speeding up airflow. These vortices weaken the higher they are above the ground.
There's also an issue with tyre squirt: the tyres inject turbulent low energy in the diffuser. The higher the diffuser is above the ground, the more of this energy gets into the diffuser.

To mitigate that, teams used the highly energized exhaust plume to strengthen the vortice and to seal off the diffuser from the tyre squirt. Imagine this to be the equivalent of stretching the edges of the diffuser back down to near the ground. The latter is Illegal to do so, but the former is a nice workaround for that.

Seemingly, mercedes found ways to strengthen the vortices enough without exhaust gasses to run such a rake again. I'm curious though how this will act at low speed, when vortices are weaker and when downforce is needed the most.

In the pictures above they are running a new engine cover, right? Due to the cooling needs in Bahrain...

Still a bit of understeer on W05. There are definitely worse problems to have.

I wish they would put a proper lap in, I'm starting to get antsy about them always being 3rd or 4th fastest on the time sheets.

Why does that matter?

Just to prove the point the car is fast. right now, the car has shown is is reliable, but it has yet to show it's fast.

Im sure we'll see a good lap tomorrow, as Lewis will only be in the car one more time after that before Melbourne.

If theres anything in testing times to go by,1:36:9 Rosberg did today on MED isnt that bad in my opinion, actually shows some speed.Of course i don't know in what stint he did that or the fuel onboard as we dont know if the engine is cranked up yet.

Times are almost completely irrelevant, they could be running heavy or down on power in comparison to the other teams for testing...

It's getting irritating seeing the amount of hype around lap times, going by the statement "The pace in testing is indicative of the season" is daft, as is said elsewhere on these forums, some teams may even be running light to get near the top of the table in order to get in the headlines/attract sponsorship, which has been done a lot in the past.

^^^

For some reason I thought the final test was only two days, plenty of time to put a fast one down.

Has anyone got any trackside impressions from the W05?
