Successors to world beaters that were kind of crap

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Successors to world beaters that were kind of crap

Post

Lotus 80:

Image

Reason: http://www.connectingrod.it/HistoricalR ... o_eng.html

Lotus 76:

Image

Reason: Only finished 1 of the 9 races it started.

Williams FW20:

Image

Reason: No wins in 1998 after clinching 5 of 6 constructors crowns the years before.

Williams FW12:

Image

Reason: Normally aspirated in the last year of the last turbo era. Plus pitted against the MP4/4

Renault R27:

Image

Reason: No wins after two years of winning the constructors title.

Ferrari F2005 (debatable, I know):

Image

Reason: Only one gifted win after half a decade of winning everything.

I wonder if the RB10 might join the club some day. :-"

And 2006 McLaren. Of course 2005 model didn't win WDC or WCC, but on pure pace it was the fastest car that year.

BRM P83 H16. Replaced the excellent P261 V8, which was second in the '64 and '65 WDC and WCC, won Monaco in '66, and even scored a podium (at Le Mans Bugatti) in '67. The P83, of course, was a complete disaster - grossly over weight and over complicated.

The F2005 doesn't belong in the list, because it were the Bridgestones who were terrible.. not the car.

The M23? May I ask why you included that one?

And the MP4/7? It challenged a mighty FW14 won no less than 5 races that year. I wouldn't call that crap.

It will be the same this year. In case RedBull is now out of the top teams, is it down to the engine or down to the car? Will be difficult to seperate.

Can you posters of the other cars give a brief info of why those cars were a lot worse than their predecessors?

I'm confused as to why there are race winning cars on this list, especially the more modern examples.

McLaren MP4-18:

It would have been the successor to the MP4-17D, instead, it turned out to be terribly unreliable, failed crash tests on multiple occassions and what not. Instead, they challenged for the title in the updated version of the year old car.
