McLaren MP4-29 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Here's a good direct comparison of the leading car's sidepod profiles and the deviation from that shape by the McLaren sidepod tunnels at the rear (where they have those additonal, quite high circular sidepod exits beside the central exhaust exit).

Clearly from these shots they were capable of producing a very slim coke bottle that without those additional tunnels would have had a similar profile to the other cars in these shots, so those high tunnels must have a distinct purpose.

I don't think it is a coincidence those tunnels point directly at the rear suspension dragonfly air brakes. I was thinking about those glowing gases in another photo: turbocharger wastegate? Can they utilize the wastegate gases via these tunnels?
The other teams vent their engine compartments near the floor. McLaren can't do that because the airflow in that area is stagnant due to the air fence. So they have to vent higher.
But the pic is from Jerez, right? Fw36 and W05 are updated now.
To do something well is so worthwhile that to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy. It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one's ability, for I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone. ― Bruce McLaren

Nice start procedures simulation at 1:05.

Yes, I see that. That's correct for sure. I guess my question is, are they part of the new solution (the air brake concept) because of some advantage venting flow through the body tunnels, or a symptom of working around them? It seems like the latter, but those exits just seem very large and deliberately shaped to aim presumably hot gases at the rear arms. I was just wondering if they try to create something interesting in the old beam wing area with that setup.

Yes, yes, yes...like the last 10 years the McL is THE most beautiful car...

Sorry, but for me it is hard to talk about beauty with the penis-nose being emphasized by painting it silver and a car that has actually no paintwork, but only paint.

Ok. Dipping everything in a chrome bath is cheaper that using silver.

Video highlights the torque a bit when he leaves the garage wheelspinning at idle, more or less.

And yeah race start simulation (from pole, obviously..) cuts away before it gets too interesting :(

I'm sure that nose design came from the suppressed memory of a once small child that was traumatised, like we all were, by Mr. Noseybonk.
