McLaren MP4-29 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

What's that on the front-top-center of the engine? The oil tank curves around it. Is it the compressor portion of the turbo? Or one of the electric MGU's? Looks most like a turbo compressor but I don't see where air would exit. More pondering necessary.

EDIT: The thing on the front of the engine may just be the air intake for the turbo compressor which is further aft. The spiral looking thing may be a water passage or something that wraps around the air opening rather than being the spiral compressor housing.

Wow, what a packaging. Well, that might explain certain achievements.

What do you wish to see? The profile? That's near impossible to picture. The wheel and the rear wing endplate are in the way. The photographer would need te be in the garage to be able to take a profile shot easilly.

According to Scarbs, Mercedes run a split-turbo, with the exhaust compressor at the back, but the intake compressor at the front of the engine. So the spiral would probably be the intake compressor.

Some small, but significant changes compared to testing. Small winglet attached to the cascade is gone, and they added a small upwash vane to the inside of the rear of the endplate. The outer endplate of the cascade also seems to be extended upwards.
