Mercedes AMG F1 W05

I took a while, but it seems Merc did come though after all, despite his protestations and demands that the whole team should be marched straight to the gallows. It's nice to be rewarded after having to defend the team so much during the W01 - W03 dark ages.
He's still on the board with a different user name, but yeah some of his opinions presented as fact have been fun.

Could be the light marshaling system

Those lights are solid lights, but due to the curvature of the side protection it is distorted
It is sparks, not light due to any curvature of the side protection.

See the video in high def, not on some downloaded video... I have recorded it on my pvr ...see it on bigger screen, it is defentily light reflection ......and moreover sparks won't appear on the side protection out of nowhere

I would recommend you to watch it on high def and bigger screen

Is there any truth in the rumours that Merc could be producing 900BHP?

Can we get this thread back on track?

Technically speaking, how is it possible for Mercedes to find that pace with the W05? It surely isn't engine-related. McLaren have the firefly suspension and Williams have their nano gearbox and all that open space in the back... so what is it about this car that it makes it so special and good aero? Where's the trick?

My downloaded video is a raw cap 1080 with ridiculous bitrate. There´s no light reflections, those are yellow sparks.

It´s not really a question of it it´s sparks or not but rather where they originate from.

Also seeing it on a bigger screen simply dilutes the information because you are taking your HD material and dragging all those pixels out on a massive screen. My pixel´s per inch is tighter and gives a far superior clarity to a TV screen.

I hope we never find out, if that means that their competitors never find out either. :D

But I confess wondering the same thing. Could they finally have sorted their FRIC to satisfactory levels? The car does seem to be suspiciously good on tyres - the fact that nico powered through a bit of a graining phase and still seemed to set competitive lap times bodes well. The W03 & 04 would have had those tyres for breakfast, this time last year. Perhaps that red bull vehicle dynamics bloke gave the boys at brackly some unofficial pointers. Also, the aerodynamics looks leagues ahead at the moment.

Who knows, maybe it's just good old midnight oil (supplied by petronas, no doubt).

As is often the case, the trick is, there is no trick. It's a rather dim view to search for one single thing that accounts for a large speed difference.

is there anyone with information that could tell us if the radiator in the side pod area of this picture is a water radiator, oil radiator or intercooler? Or are there any other pics like this?

The best package of the lot.

But what really caught my eye was the tire wear.
He´s lapping about a second a lap faster then Ricciardo but can still go two laps longer in the second stint.

And they are more or less cruising :) I don´t think we have even seen the full potential of the car.

The main difference I see in comparison with McL or Williams is the rake. Rake in combination with a good working FRIC system won the championship last year...and as Mercedes is working on the FRIC for a few years now they should have it working. They already had a very good diffusor last year, maybe even more downforce than Redbull at the beginning, so for me this is not a surprise, that the aero package is so good.

If we see the lap times, Nico did his best in lap 19 - 1.32:4 and after that he just finished the race with a steady pace without pushing the car's limit. So we will see more from that Silver Arrow through out the season. :) I hope so...

What's scarier is that Merc has long gears and Melbourne is a track suited to short gears, the car should be even better in Malaysia.

Do you have the 4th picture in high res? Thanks.
Here you go. The carbon panel under the nose is directing air towards the T tray
