Technically speaking, how is it possible for Mercedes to find that pace with the W05? It surely isn't engine-related. McLaren have the firefly suspension and Williams have their nano gearbox and all that open space in the back... so what is it about this car that it makes it so special and good aero? Where's the trick?
If you compare the level of refinement and ingenuity of the W05 with the other cars, you can clearly see this car been developed over a longer period. We all heard the stories about how Merc wanted to win in 2014. They have obviously put a lot of effort in to this car. At the Jerez launch the difference between the level of detail compared to the other cars huge. When i saw to amount of detail the front wing an the suspension had compared to you could tell that the car should be competitive. The eye for detail compared with all the W0's before was night and day. Also the nose of the car, not like most teams choosing the easy option and choose for max air flow for the diffuser, Merc uses the nose the create down force. Little things like that makes the car go faster.
I'am most proud about the fact that they finaly sorted their tire wear issues. Because the W04 could have challenged for WC last year a lot of poles put the tires holding it back. Now they got it all sorted qualifying pace and race pace. A lot of credit must go to Costa, Bell and Willis because this cars looks fast and goes fast, a real silver arrow.
Irvine:"If you don't have a good car you can't win it, unless you are Michael or Senna. Lots of guys won in Adrian Newey's cars, big deal. Adrian is the real genius out there, there is Senna, there is Michael and there is Newey. They were the three great talents."
