McLaren MP4-29 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

:wtf:
I do not mean it is bad, but compromised for other advantages. And even a race winning car has room for improvements.

Maybe it's to do with the smooth track surface as well?

The upgrade package will bring 0.3 seconds as usually, the other 0.2 will come from refining the set-up of the whole package, as Mclaren until know was still in the launch version of the car. It doesn't have any connection with the engine or the smooth surface, because mp4-29 doesn't have the problems of last year's car. It's the package and the set-up work of the new package.

Jenson Button from the Malaysian GP Preview:

“It’s important that we keep pushing hard on the development front – we brought some useful upgrades to Melbourne, and it was encouraging that they worked straight out of the box..."

You can't say that for sure. The truth is that only a few details transpired regarding the engine power modes teams ran in Australia, so a part of the gain will probably come from the engine as well. Also, it's pretty hard to measure the absolute gain of an upgrade package as we don't have enough data (fuel loads, setup, aero configuration, etc) to compare the old and the new. If what they're saying it's true, then probably Mclaren will battle Williams for a podium on Sunday. If it's dry.

That would only be true if nobody else managed to improve their cars. That's not going to happen.

Who else? Mercedes is miles ahead anyway, Red Bull have their power unit issues and it can't be predicted if/when those are going to be fixed and Ferrari already admitted to having ERS problems that will take some time to fix. In all fairness, matching the others' development pace doesn't seem to be a problem now. Even under normal conditions (no turbo revolution), bringing a significant upgrade package to the second race is not something that normally happens.

With power units and drivetrains this new, there will be plenty of easy time available from fast refinements, mapping and setup work that hasn't been nailed down due to just getting everything reliable, I'd be amazed if even Caterham and Mariusa don't make some progress with upgrades and refinements there, it doesn't always take bolting something on the outside to make the car faster.

Excuse me if this has been posted before, but I don't remember seeing the rear suspension from this angle.

Yeah, it looks even more interesting now. Especially that those two holes in the body are blowing (hot?) air on that rear suspension things.

They are definitely working hard on developing rear parts.
Now Ron Dennis is in charge so it goes pretty well :D

Uhhh, which two holes? I see nothing new in this photo.

Does it? Who says? What makes you think any upgrades are any good?

Interesting, so the lower front wishbone is attached via ball joints and not flextures?
