McLaren MP4-29 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

And I thank you. F1 is now a goldmine for good, old-fashioned, low-brow humor, because the cars look like dicks and sound like farts. This stuff writes itself.
frosty125 wrote:Could someone explain the sidepod cooling concept McLaren have gone for and the advantages of it. The angle of the radiators is very different to most of the other cars.
It's my understanding that sidepods are essentially pressurized systems in which air flow to cool the radiators is forced through them as a result of a pressure differential between the inlet and vent(s) of the sidepods. In other words, the forward motion of the car alone is not directly responsible for driving air through the radiators; rather, the forward motion of the car creates a pressure differential that is responsible for driving air through the radiators.

Because of that, designers have a bit of latitude when it comes to choosing a layout within. Radiators and intercoolers do not need to be positioned in such a way to make use of a ram-air effect. (Though, they can be.)

A relatively low-pressure system comes with a smaller drag penalty, because the inlets can be made relatively smaller. The trade-off is the need for a relatively larger radiator in order to provide the same cooling efficiency of of a higher pressure system with larger inlets. The benefit of the latter philosophy is overall tighter packaging, because it enables the use of a relatively smaller radiator.

(Relatively, relatively.)

And please accept this as a "Cooling for Dummies" explanation, as those are the only explanations I'm qualified to offer.

So the Updates in Sepang help with the Car Balance, not pure Downforce. Once they have a well balanced Car they will add Downforce.

This update looks a bit inspired by the update they brought in 2012, during the spanish gp, where they raised the nose for allowing more air under. Will be interesting to see how much rear df it will ad. If it will enable them to run more frontwing angle or its just there to dial out the understeer/stabalize the rear in high speed. No matter a nice upgrade.

Great shot of the rear suspension...

The rear profile of the mushrooms looks almost semicircular in this shot.

I'm in the "copied from STR" camp.

So still essentially the same company:- Esso = Ess Ohh = S.O. = Standard Oil. Esso + Exxon + Mobil 1 = ExxonMobil Inc. Interestingly Esso used to also be Esso in the USA back when it was Rockefeller running the shop, but was forced to become Exxon due to the original anti-trust laws in the early 1900s.

Do we think that the front nose solution seen in Malaysia is the one which failed the initial crash test pre-season? And the previous one we've seen in Aus was a 'safe' solution?
Just a fan's point of view

Don't think so. I think the one that was on at launch was the one that failed. People in here seems to think that if the nose fails a crash test a complete redesign is needed. Its not.

This is probably just a planned update. And I would not be surprised if we see several other noses during the season. From every team almost.
