A shameless image thread for the enginephiles

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

I think this too can fit here.

Nice article about the turbo-charged indy engines in 1975 before Vel's Parnelli Jones Racing V-8 Cosworth Turbo experiment.

WTG Sombrero!!!

Thank God someone found that engine. That was the last Indianapolis 500 worth watching. I loved it. Three Mercedes powered were cars entered. No one knew if the engines would make it (Jesus, ,,,, PUSHRODS?!). One car grenaded. I held my breath watching the remaining two. They CRUSHED the rest of the field. YES! The mifted third place driver said "Well, I figure that I won first in class". Sour grapes? Oh poor baby. Go suck on it.

The Merc was innovative and risky. AND WONDERFUL.

Of course, it was banned the next year. I haven't seen an Indy 500 since. IRL is so much worse than even the FIA's oh-so-poor excuse for F1.

So sweet. Thanks!!!

I just LOVE how they realized that an ancient a rule to de-power OHC engines could be turned around to EM-power a push rod engine. Always great to stick it to the rule makers.

I love smokeys determination. According to his book he pulled the engine out of a school bus then went on to qualify it for Indy.

Only problem was that it killed CART and open wheel racing in the US for good, this is the original 1988 Ilmor/Chevy 2.65 V8;

The only image I could find of the Ferrari 034 CART-engine, back in 1986 when the old man threatened to leave F1;

The project fell apart when the FIA accommodated V12s in F1 for 89, but I doubt if they would have had sponsor-problems.
