Team Director Dr Helmut Marko? Helmut must've written this article himself to get that title.

Renault has pretty much said the same thing that I said on page 4...

"There's two big items that drive this," he said.

"Firstly revs: we went from 18,000 to something like 12,000 this year.

"It's important to say it's based on the regulations, because they set 15,000 as a maximum, but the fuel flow limitation means the maximum we're running, whether it's a Ferrari, a Mercedes, or a Renault, is 12,000 and at the end of the straight it could be 10 or 11,000.

"This makes a very big difference, because last year it was 18,000. Now where you've got grandstands it's something like 10.

"The other item is the turbo. You put one thing through the path of the exhaust gases, which is like if you would put a pillow on someone's face. It acts as a muffler."

"If you combine these two, we've got the result we've got."

Taffin said the noise of the engines could increase if they revved harder, but this would be impossible while the regulations mandate a fuel flow limit of 100kg/h.

"If you want to have a different noise you have to go up on revs, but there would be no point going up on revs if you look at the fuel flow, because you would have to get the fuel flow up. But then you bring get your efficiency down," he added.

"There's nothing you can do with exhaust profiling because again you've got both exhaust pipes running into the same tailpipe after it has run through the turbo, so it is what it is."

How about afterburner? Let say 20 liters of kerozine mandated for each car. And than deployed from FIA ECU on areas where are spectators (infront all grandstads)? LOL :D

Or they add rule of mandated sound magnitude. Let say for example 20 meters in-front car must be sound magnitude 100 dB.

I must stop now because all that "ideas" are contradicted fuel economy formula concept.

Dont bother with that i wrote that when i drank 10l of beers.

Surely the simple solution is for each car to carry a microphone, an amplifier & a huge set of speakers. Crank the amp up to 11 & voila!

Well if the issue is essentially a lack of revs due to the maximum fuel flow, drop two cylinders to increase the available fuel flow to mix with the air flow at higher revs.

This is all ferrari's fault

Not really no, it's simply technology's fault. We have advanced substantially in our ability to design efficient engines, the result is that very little energy is wasted as sound now. We simply can't have modern formula 1, and noise at the same time I'm afraid.

I agree, however, the flow rate ristriction was placed arbitrarily, it wasn't arrived at as the most efficient flow rate via the evolution of the technology.

Ditch the fuel flow limit and kg limit and let them have specific qualifying engines with no restrictions, no rev limit etc.

And the folks on grandstand would ask why engines that sounded so great on Saturday are muted on Sundays.

We all knew before the sound would suck. The FIA and the teams also knew this way way before the season started. They should ban that turbo, and allow a 2.0 v6 or at least a 1.8L v6 with no rev limit. The cars would have as much as they do have know with a turbo, but we wouldnt mis the beauty of the sound (high revs)
But this would be totally unfair for the Mercedes team who put all their money on the turbo powered horse.

But hey! At least we can here slipping tyres and a beautiful turbo sound LOL
