I'm guessing Merc are running with their PU turned down. Ferrari was close in practice at the last race and not even close in the race.

Why did they do so few laps ? Preservation ?

They all had the "small"/low temp engine covers, didn't they? Those probably weren't suited for longer runs in the temperatures during FP1, just good enough for a few laps and for lower temps in FP2/Quali/Race ...

Notice that Ferrari and Merc engines frequent almost all the top 10 spaces. Anyone think this will continue for the weekend?

don't forget they also had 8 days worth of running here a few weeks ago so its not like they need a load of data and set up work (mixed in with the fact fp1 will be different from any other session this weekend).

The same used to happen with Barcelona when they used to test there no end, they end up not needing to do much in FP

maybe. I would of expected RBR to be higher up the field really. Maybe Malaysia just suited there car? and in fact they haven't made the gains we thought?

Yes they had new engines so might be taking it easy, but I bet no one else has there PU up full either.

Also aren't they running some 4 secs slower than testing? front running GP2 cars are going quicker than Catherham

think of the difference in cost between the two though....its not really that funny.

So during testing they were running without the fuel flow meter just to satisfy fans?

I dont thinks so. Remember Vettels last couple of seasons. When Vettel feels that the car is comfortable enough, he just first couple of practices (Friday) concentrate on setup work and minor refinements. So I don't think it would be wise to write off Red Bull just yet.

I didn't. I said maybe and used question marks.

Another foot, and the AoA on the front wing would mean it would not be doing much at all. Meanwhile, the pressure build up under the car, and the drag on the large area of floor exposed would be getting close to exceeding that little work that it does do.
