McLaren MP4-29 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Hold on, maybe they just want some track time with a normal suspension to compare the two. It doesn't mean that the butterfly is a disaster.

We'll see in China if it stays or maybe it will be used only on certain tracks.
WOW, again you guys are jumping to conclusions right away.......Hold on a sec, maybe they are just testing low downforce spec set up for the races like SPA & Monza???!!!!

Thanks

I think Stefan is right... they are probably just A/B'ing the butterfly suspension with and without to see how the car works without and which is more efficient. It's great that they are testing on a track on which they've just gone flat out on as it gives them such good data to work with and comparison data.

Not just A/B'ing but even testing just one of the butterflies.

Everyone was slower than Quali, but if you look at FP3 results (similar conditions to today) Kevin was 2 tenths faster than FP3.

Expect they are testing it without for the high speed circuits where it isn't needed.

I know it's been mentioned before but why do the red bull and mercedes have so much more rake than mclaren, and do they have one of those trick FRIC suspension systems yet?

Everybody has interlinked suspension, everybody has had it for a long while.

How trick it is, is entirely up to the team in question.

Indeed, broken rod. A bit easier to find between the rest:

If this works, they will then need to optimize the hot air outlets as well. Heck, if the half -or none- butterfly suspension looks good with the outlets where they are, Macca will be able to find even more speed by optimizing the shape of the rear end.
