lightest cars ever?

Post

What are some lightweight, older cars? I would not count something like a 7 as it isn't really a practical everyday car. Preferably post war through the 70s, european. Basically minis and flats and such.

the first Minis (about 90 cars, a pre-production batch ?) had Magnesium alloy transmission castings
they were said to weigh less than half a ton, so were in demand for competition in the early days

around then a friend knew Mr 'Emerson' (Enzmann), who had an Enzmann car, super light (900 lb ?)
this was a properly-bodied car, VW/Porsche engined spaceframe with no doors but a sliding bubble canopy like a fighter plane

Steyr-Puch made 650 cc Fiat 500s
NSU Prinz 600 cc ? twins BMW 600 and 700 cc twins Panhard twins DAF twins
early Saab (DKW) twins, Trabant, Lloyd/Goggomobil
all Japanese twins 360 cc and larger eg 600 cc

Isn't a car supposed to have 4 wheels? I would call this a tricycle. :D

Well, it's classified as a car (in most countries).

Definitely not a practical car. I mean a normal, use able production car that's reasonably plentiful and inexpensive

I doubt any mini that came off production type tools came in at less than 500 kg. 580kg seems to be the lightest spec figure.

The lightest modernish car I can think of that actually has 4 wheels and a proper unibody is the 205, Rallye for preference (sub 800kg).

More than 100 years ago... How little progress we have made since then in term of weight. With that ridiculous weight you don't need hybrid powertrain at all !

I'm guessing the bodywork was doped canvas over wood. if you want to drive around in a tent go for it.

Why dont you just pick a car then and we will tell you the weight. We have no idea what usable means to you. We have no idea what reasonably plentiful means to you. We have no idea what country you live in or what cars or specs are available. #-o

Does the imp weigh more or less than the mini? What about compared to a beetle?
