CFD Software - Upgrading from Gambit to ICEM. Exceed?

Post

Hi guys,

I have just invested in the Ansys range of produts, and as such, I am performing a complete reinstall of my CFD/FEM system to "start from scratch".

I am using Windows XP Pro x64. Previously I had been using Fluent and Gambit.

My question is actually pretty straightforward - if I do not use Gambit (I am going to start using ICEM for pre and post) do I need to install Exceed? Is the Hummingbird necessary for Fluent? Can't find anything about it in the docs...

Many thanks,

Martin

Nope, no need for exceed when using Fluent, Icem or CFX.

Be warned though, I think some ICEM features may not work in the Win XP 64bit edition - one of the other guys here runs it on a windows 64 bit box and said something along those lines last week.

If you have any more questions or queries, just post them, if I don't know I can ask on monday :)

Ok thanks for that. Thank God - Exceed PowerSuite always massively slowed my system down...

My software came in 2 DVDs - x86 bit and x64 bit, so I'm assuming the 64-bit will be ok on XP x64?

Unless it is intended to be run on Server 2003 (an upgrade I would do without! :D )

You've just got ICEM yeah?

It'll come in versions for windows 32 bit, linux 32 bit (thats both i386).

There will also be versions for:

64 bit windows
64 bit linux (Red Hat Enterprise compatible)
HP itanium
SGI

and maybe a few others, I can't really mind.

64bit win xp will use the 64bit windows disk ok. :)

I just spent a lot of money on the complete Ansys suite. Going to try and teach it to myself over the next year :D

No - designSpace, Multiphysics, a couple of others. When I swap out this disk (which is my "general" OS) for my x64 one, I'll confirm exactly what's on there.

hey guys, in ICEM what do you save the file type as in order for Fluent to be able to read the file?

I can import a meshed file from Gambit into ICEM, but after importing it into ICEM, i cannot figure out how to export it to fluent. any help would be greatly appreciated, i really hate using gambit.

using ICEM, Fluent 6.2

Okedokey...

Open up ICEM.

On the top toolbar go to Settings->Product

Then make sure it is on ANSYS ICEM CFD - Full CFD Version

If you have to change this, do it, hit apply, then close and reopen ICEM.

Then, on the meshing tabs bar (at the top of the viewing window), under output you select solver (it should be the little red toolbox, the only thing you can select).

In there you want Fluent v6.

Ohmigod, I am so happy that you helped me, kilcoo. It worked, everything works now, I can export directly to fluent! I am running a flat plate simulation with a million nodes right now, it's taking forever but I'm sure it will be worth it. I wish I could upload some images, but oh well. Thanks again.

P.S. Do you have any idea where to get the Fluent tutorial files (I got the tutorials, but no files for them)? Also, any tutorials on ICEM?
