Mercedes AMG F1 W05

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I wonder if it is shaped like that to exploit the loophole that allows brake cooling ducts. In reality it'll be an aero flow conditioner that just happens to have some air than might come from somewhere near the brakes so it can pass the regs?
Thats what I think. And they are trying to direct more air into the wake of the rear tires. Trying to remove that low pressure are. But according to Scarbs they are not legal. He says that brake ducts must not be higher than the top of the rim. And these clearly are.

Maybe they try to exploit a loophole. At first I thought the pipes are open on the top. But they are not. The opening itself is below rim height. And the rest of the pipe then acts as flow conditioner.

The Carbon structure can mislead. At most pictures it seems as the ducts are closed, but the behind Shot shows they are indeed open and act as some form of duct.

It will be tested by Rosberg for tomorrow
Rosberg will be the man who gets to trial the megaphone exhaust, with Mercedes expected to run it on the second day of the test.

Trivial but the 44 has been moved back, I guess its in part the Nicos 6 was basically covered with the antenna area.

I wonder if these chimneys are purely to take any unwanted air away from the diffuser.

The Mercedes continues to experiment: test in Barcelona has seen a front wing is identical in form to that which was used in the Spanish GP Lewis Hamilton won Sunday. The difference was only in the arrangement of the ballast : look at the neutral central profile which now has the "flaps" the largest and most advanced of which are hidden under the cakes of tungsten . On W05 , then, the engineers at Brackley would have arrived at the limit of the distribution front of the weights (the FIA rules, in fact, requires a minimum of 314 kg on the front and 369 on the back, having 9 kg to move ... to find the best balance.) The image shows that the weight has been moved on the front , perhaps to avoid oversteer which just Lewis had complained in the final laps of Sunday's race (which had resolved with a stiffer rear differential). The modification imposes a greater load of the front wing (to avoid generating understeer, but allows to download slightly back, favoring a greater maximum speed.

The rear brake chimneys are interesting, wonder how the air exiting may affect the airflow around the rw

Is it exiting, or pulling air in via pumping action of the wheel turning?
Honda!
