FIA brings in noise engineers for test...

Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

It's just an observation.
The gases formed creates a wall, acoustic insulation in the rear. The sound is converted into something (maybe thermal energy).
The car (no movement) = sound
The car in motion = sound low
motive: by this wall.
What we hear is: a blend of residual sounds, engine, turbo, wings. And almost nothing of the sound of the exhaust.
This video from Mercedes, shows this situation

The sound, the car approximation

Source: Gp Update
The location of the exhausts, changes the final sound.
A simple test:
Change location the exhaust to the lateral, near the engine.
Example: layouts cars: Renault F1 Team 2004 or 2013.
It's just a sound test, and the car has to be evaluated in motion.
It's just an observation. have some foundation?

Why they chose a simple funnel-shaped, but not curved shape of the megaphone?
Like this:

Due to significant backpressure loss is my guess - the megaphone type exhausts are used to draw heat out of the engine and exhaust as well as reduce backpressure when used on motorcycles...so I assuming that would negatively impact engine performance.
Actually you will get more horsepower form the turbocharger with less back-pressure.

Furthermore, the kind of exhaust tweak that Mercedes is trying is not allowed under the current regulations, so a rule-change would be needed if it was going to be raced.

This would require unanimous support from the teams so it could be put to the FIA's World Motor Sport Council.
So in other words this will never happen. Teams can never agree on anything let alone saving the sport.

gamaphone soldier on the outside of the exhaust amplifies the sound.
the Bell may have various formats, rectangular or oval.
amplification: blown air or "resonance"

in this case the problem is mouthpiece. It must have a small diameter, compared with "Bell" diameter.
The timbre is created with the drawing inside the mouthpiece. "I believe it's not something simple".
The body can have various formats.
The original exhaust, can be maintained, with two or four, sound amplification cones ( external ).
If it is blown must be a normal nozzle and other detailed.

If that is a real image and not photoshopped then Mercedes is taking the p%&*.  They mentioned there was another alternative and perhaps what we are seeing is Mercedes trying to steer the F.I.A to the more complex alternative.

Wow that looks .... extreme. But bear in Mind there is Bodywork and a Monkey Seat missing that before covered a lot of the Exhaust. So IF that solution goes through the Bodywork will cover much of it.

But Simulation Expert Peter Schöggl said yesterday there are 6 or 7 more Soultions in the making. This is just the easiest one to pull of in a short Timeframe.

The trumpet is 200mm i diameter. So it takes up much of the space avalible for the monkeyseat in the 200mm exclusion aera. So you cant cover it up like those exhaust tips we have now.

Isn't the Trupet 150mm diameter?

Edit: Of Course it takes more Room but the Teams will find a way to place a Monkey Seat there.

The "old" exhaust diameter was 150mm. The trumpet tapers out to 200mm. So you cant cover it with a monkey seat. You can place one in front of it but not cover it.

grrr... surely a professional journalist should know how to use an apostrophe? Oh, it's Sky.

An apostrophe is not possessive when used with "its".

"W05 and it's trumpet" = The W05 is a trumpet
"W05 and its trumpet" = The W05 has a trumpet
