McLaren have finally announced their new driver line-up for 2015 as it embarks on a new era with Honda power. While Fernando Alonso joins from Ferrari, Jenson Button is retained as a racing racing. Kevin Magnussen will stay at the team as test and reserve driver.
McLaren got the actual powerunit latest, also McLaren uses Mobil 1 instead of Petronas as the sole Mercedes team. This year fuel is really important, Petronas has devolped the optimal fuel and McLaren isn't running that. We all here stories how a new fuel can gain you 10hp or more, so McLaren might not get the same performance levels out of the powerunit as Williams, Mercedes and Force India. When you abandon your current their upsides and downsides, upside 2014 can spend more time in Windtunnel / CFD. Downside when you are not developing your current car you never reach that barrier when eking performance becomes difficult and you start trying innovative solutions. When you look at the RB9 car through the season got more and more intricate those things you learn you can pass on the next car. Mclaren is the first of the big teams that last year publicly said that they will abandon all kind of effort on the 2013 car and that they will put all the effort, but all the effort on 2014. That was happening at the end of June 2013. In the same time Red Bull, Ferrari and Lotus developed at a higher rate the car until August-Setember 2013. Even after that, Mercedes and Ferrari continued to put new bites on the car from time to time, in their fight for the second place in the Constructors. Red Bull too put a great effort in updateing the car until the end of September. What was Mclaren doing in the same time? For so many months before the competition they said that they are full working only for 2014 car. Where are those months which they should have over the competition by switching everything for 2014? I know that all the big teams started to work on the 2014 projects in 2011-2012, but Mclaren is the first of the bigs that said: ALL AND EVERYTHING FOR 2014. What were they doing almost half a year of full resources for 2014 when the other were battling for positions in the 2013 Championship?
I can't think that they did nothing for 5 months with so many resources availeble. As a devoted Mclaren fan, this question is hunting me down. Where were the technical team when the others were diverting the efforts towards 2 projects? They have followed only one project, and the didn't create not a single advantage over the competition.
I'm thinking that if it is because the Mercedes were treating them strictly as an engine provider, knowing they will go with Honda, with no real support (in comparison Williams said that they were never so supported by an engine provider with so much details and feed back like Mercedes treated them in the autum of 2013), or that they started to focus resources towards the 2015 car since than? Is it possible that they said they are full gearing towards 2014 but they knew that Mercedes will not give them much information, and the started to work on 2015 car? If it's not the case, what were they doing in those months when everybody developed the 2013 cars?

Yeah I know how you feel, McLaren haven't really bought anything visual to the car in last 2 races which is disappointing especially as they say they can develop quickly. I'm concerned.
Also what annoys me is the 'we'll see after silverstone', our home race. Great. So all the Brits who spend a fortunate to see mclaren do rubbish, have to endure another torrid British GP, then Mclaren will look to improve.

They brought a new diffuser and allegedly a tighter rear-end bodywork. I think you sum it up quite well, they are bringing developments but not all of them are immediately apparent. It has been mentioned several times before but the current Merc car was started several years ago, development of F1 cars does not happen overnight and therefore weaknesses in the team(s) and poor management takes a while to come to the fore.McMrocks wrote:They brought a new diffuser and allegedly a tighter rear-end bodywork. I think they know bettter how to develope a car than we do. They have the data and we maybe don't even know the real reason for their "decline".
On a side-note, are they still using the Toyota Windtunnel in Cologne or have they finished the 'redesigning' of their own WT?

I do find it insulting that the German/Austrian anthems play for Mercedes and RedBull. I see that Vandoorne completed 136 laps today and earned his super licence. Hopefully he's replacing Jenson Mutton soon!
