Lotus E22 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Dont know why they paint those parts...
Lotus should even try this: strip this E22 from its black paint, just keep a bare carbon 'livery' which is black anyway (and just keep the red and 'gold' parts) in order to save weight and transform it into useful ballast : P the E22 is overweight according to Grosjean.

Does bare carbon not have more friction than painted carbon? Friction that can cause drag?

In 2011 when Lotus introduced this black livery they claimed it wheights less than other colors because you paint less layers
It's been a long time since we drove last time, but it has also been a short time at the same time

There is no such thing as bare carbon. All the "bare" carbon you see is coated in a clear-coat to protect the carbon from UV rays, tyre rubber chunks, bugs, stones etc, also to make sure the carbon is water sealed.

It's fairly obvious what he meant. "naked carbon"

You can cure carbon fiber prepreg without any coating over it and get a perfectly waterproof part with a smooth, glossy finish. UV resistant resin can almost always be specified.

The carbon fibers are usually very close to the tool side of the laminate. Even if you don't use peel ply, there's usually enough cured resin to roughen the surface for bond or paint prep, but you ruin the part if your roughen into the fibers themselves. the adhesives and paint won't stick to the bare carbon.

A protective layer just adds weight and doesn't necessarily add any function to the part.

Yes, which is probably why they were painting the turning vanes instead of leaving them bare as they normally do. It may be extra weight but the paints are so thin nowadays that there's probably more laptime in painting parts to reduce drag than removing paint to reduce weight.
