Well, Button said he was really struggling with the supersoft but the soft was fine. Let's see if this is going to be the same in Austria.

I suppose it's possible the extra weight compresses the suspension and they get a little more air leakage underneath.

It was very impressive the last stint, consistently lapping in the 1;18s when the fastest lap of the race was 1;18;5.

Well, this is one problem: The suspension...it is just very hard to set up and works only in a small weight/temperature range.
It was the same with Merc in 2012. They were sometimes doing incredible stints or whole races with their interconnected suspension and most of the time they were nowhere.

Imagine if they 'cracked' it though?

Too late for 2014. Rather sort it out but use only in 2015 with Honda and start the season as strongest.

Well, it took two seasons for Merc to be where they are now: Developing the setup of the interconnected suspension to work not only occasionally (what they had in 2012), but on every track for the full race, what they have for 2014.
We have to remember, that McLaren started with this suspension in 2013 and changed the front axle completely for this season. So nearly no data usable from last season...maybe they get it right next season, but I doubt it will be as good as the Merc/Redbull suspension...

What makes you think Mclaren didn't have an interconnected suspension before last year? Hell, Marussia started 2013 with one.

Anyways the reason I posted is... how do Mobil1 develop fuel? I'm pretty sure they have no access to the Merc engine(other than official running). If they're doing it all through computer simulation and past experience.... sheesh! No wonder they're behind Petronas.

I do not think they did not have one before. But they had obviously a completely different, very stiff suspension on the 2012 car. In 2013 they went for more rake and a soft rear suspension. This makes another sort of interconnected suspension necessary. One which controls the front height on the straights to keep the splitter from hitting the ground too much, but just having it touching the ground. Redbull is perfect on this...
So, it is nothing that is not obvious that they have a new suspension since 2013. You can see it by looking at the different aero-solution/rake.

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/114406 I think this confirm's what I said previously about the team having to wait for something significant to arrive aero wise on the car because of the restructuring. Excited to see what McLaren bring with them, sound's like we could see this slimmer sidepod's finger's crossed!

I think its about time to clearly see some different parts on the MP4-29, otherwise it will be one more disappointment.
I don't expect miracles but I want to see that the car and thus the team is really changing for better. [-o<

The Upgrade Package Part 1 in Austria should definitely help them. If this works and Part 2 in Silverstone too Macca will be in a good spot. I have a good feeling about the Changes RD and EB introduce. It takes Time but hopefully will pay off.

Would be so nice to see them Fight for the Podium / Win again.

Another possibility for the long delay in upgrades is a change in development / disign philosopy.

With new engineers like Matt Morris and others that have joined since the beginning of the year, this will take longer.

Lets hold thumps for the upgrades :D

You're talking about different setup philosophies, not different types of suspension. All the large teams have been running interconnected suspensions for a fair few years, but Merc is the only one proven to have the large amount of hydraulic wizardry,so far.

Too confident in my opinion. They should focus on beating FI regularly and not on catching RB. I hope that this is not going to be a story like "we'll be .5s faster in Malaysia". A good small step is what i expect.
